Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
